Official Plan for King: Public Consultation

Updated: May 5, 2019

On May 1, 2019, eager residents packed the municipal centre here in King City to have their input heard on the second draft Official Plan known as "Our King". The intent of the draft Official Plan is to establish a comprehensive, long-term vision for the future of the Township as a whole and a detailed policy framework to guide growth and development in the Township's Villages, Hamlets and rural area. The draft Official Plan addresses the Township's long-term planning requirements to the year 2031 and brings the Township into conformity with recent Provincial and upper-tier land use policy direction. The draft Official Plan will apply to the entirety of King Township.

I have taken time to review the entire plan extensively and have cautious optimism on what I see so far. A few items that I am excited to see included in this plan are:

  • The protection of established neighbourhoods from intensification efforts.

  • Emphasis on bringing a more diverse selection of housing options in the correct areas as not to disturb established neighbourhoods in King City. This will greatly benefit our seniors and young families. I will continue to strongly champion for our seniors who at the moment have very little downsizing options!

  • The strong protection of environmentally sensitive lands throughout the entire Township.

  • I am happy to also see mixed use and employment land opportunities through King Township, developing these lands will not only help reduce the tax burden on households but also allows for more residents to work and live in the Township.

The Official Plan forecasts growth of King Township to 34,900 people, with a majority of that growth occurring in King City in the next number of years. This is largely due to upper-tier planning policy and the fact that King City has the capacity that the other Villages simply do not have at this point in time.
