2021 Water and Wastewater Rates

A report is coming before Council to discuss the water and wastewater rates for 2021. I would like to highlight some of the changes and steps made towards better serving the residents of Ward 1.

One of the exciting changes for 2021 is that the 1" residential meter rates is going to start to be blended with the existing 5/8" and 3/4" meter rates. Please see graphic below.

As you can see there are 1000 homes on the 1" meter size. The majority of these 1" meter homes are in Ward 1 and are a result of new building code standards. I am glad that I was able to bring this issue to staffs attention and that staff were able to start blending the rates with very little negative impact to existing 5/8" and 3/4" meter homes. While providing much needed relief to the homes that are on 1" meters. This change is fair and will benefit all residents.

Moving forward to the actually water and wastewater. The average home in King Township uses 270 cubic metres of water each year. Below is a graphic detailing the change in rates.

The proposed increase for the average user in King Township will be $4.13 a month. Water and wastewater rates must be used to fully fund the entire cost of the water and wastewater infrastructure as well as fund reserves for eventual replacement of these systems. The rates cannot be subzidies by municipal property taxes and must be full cost recovery.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
